Vysotsky Magadan International Airport (IATA: GDX, ICAO: UHMM) is a federal airport located near the village of Sokol, north of the city of Magadan on 56 km of the main Kolyma highway.
It provides regular flights from the Magadan Region to the Russian Far East, Siberia and Moscow.
There is also a Magadan-13 airfield in the vicinity of the city, owned by Magadan Aircraft Repair Plant No. 73 HA. The Magadan-Severny 47 km unpaved airfield used to function, but is now inactive; it is used for small aircraft of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (for example, for helicopters).
History
The new airport, named Magadan-56 (due to its location on 56 km of the Kolyma Highway), took over all passenger air transportation services in the region. Of the old airports (at 13 and 47 km), only special-purpose flights are operated, and the unpaved runway of airfield-47 does not meet modern technical requirements.
In 1978, the Promstroy Trust began to reconstruct the runway and ground services buildings. On December 13, 1980, the first IL-62 aircraft landed at Magadan airport. The next day, the airliners began making regular non-stop flights from Magadan to Moscow.
On May 20, 1979, a monument to labor glory was unveiled on the forecourt at Magadan airport: an An-12 aircraft with the USSR tail number 11355. The airliner worked for almost 13 years in the Magadan aviation squadron, carrying out transportation in the Far North-East.
The Magadan Aviation squadron, formed in 1963 from the flight personnel of the old air bases, existed until 1991, when it was reorganized. In 1991, the airport received international status.
In September 1999, the Magadan City Administration registered a new company name — the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Magadan Airport.
In March 2005, Yakutia Airlines flights from Yakutsk to Magadan became permanent.
At the end of 2012, FSUE Magadan Airport was transformed into an open joint-stock company.
Since 2014, the airport, together with the Far East Spotting Team, has regularly held spotting events in order to promote civil aviation and the air harbor.
On April 20, 2016, it officially received federal status.
On May 31, 2019, the airport was named after Vladimir Vysotsky.
On June 4, 2019, the first flight of Ural Airlines on the Yekaterinburg—Yakutsk —Magadan route arrived.
On December 9, 2019, a Boeing 747-8F AirBridgeCargo flight operated by Captain A.V. Slepykh arrived from Moscow to Magadan for the first time. One of the largest aircraft in the world delivered 62.6 tons of cargo (consumer goods) and 10.9 tons of mail. On December 10, 2019, the Boeing 747-8F took off on the Magadan—Hong Kong route.
On May 13, 2020, by decree of the President of Russia, the airport was transferred to the ownership of the Magadan Region under the control of the regional government.
For 2023-2024, thanks to the support of VEB.Russia and Sberbank have built a new airport terminal. It is capable of carrying 800 passengers per hour or up to 1 million passengers per year.
On December 20, 2024, an S7 plane from Novosibirsk landed at the new airport. This was the first test flight accepted by the modern terminal in Sokol, and on December 22, 2024, the new terminal was officially opened by Russian President Vladimir Putin via video link. The new terminal is equipped with 12 elevators, 2 escalators and 2 teletraps.
